Artist in Focus
Sculptor Asurvedh's home is our capital Delhi. He has grown up seeing Delhi growing along with him. He is an attestation to the evolution of the capital. Be it architecture, people, birds, animals or climate. Nothing is same as it was in olden days. But they still exist evidently in the works of sculptor safely archived.

Human being has lost a lot in the crazy rush of development. They have lost moving from village to town people have lost in dream city and they are continuously losing something. Morning begins with the chirping of birds. The birds fill the space with their melodious songs which puts a new enthusiasm in body, mind and soul. But now a days, we have missed these things. We have seen a considerable decrease in the number of birds in Delhi. They have become confined in to zoo or ruined buildings or in fruit laden trees. They usually live the place of building corner or window side of the house. We can’t see birds like before only memories are with us.
I have been working on historical monuments for a long time but when I started working on new series then these birds started tweeting in my sculptures. I have depicted these birds earlier but this time I have emphasized on their portrayal and with this we can bring back these birds to our house and in our life.
In my earlier art practice old monumental buildings and their remains were used. Their grandness, architectural skill, structural appearance and several stories buried in these building used to tell me something. There was a time, when we used to roam in these monuments without any boundaries but now these have become only site with rules and regulations. We are continuously forgetting these. I usually depict these things in my art works which signifies our present situation.
I keep these birds with monumental ruins with human figures offering a prayer. May be someday my prayer will be granted. These old monuments have deep relation with trees. We usually see trees coming out of the walls which signifies life out of these ruins.
This city is turning in to jungle of cement-concrete. Although there are lot of trees on the road side but they seem miserable and deserted. We see them but don’t relate to them. There is neither chirping of birds nor fragrance of flowers. There is no any courtyard in homes. If there is some space for courtyard people make it plastered for their convenience and hygiene. So there are no trees in courtyard then how the birds will make it their nest. We have thrown out birds out of our life. We keep decorating our houses with artificial flowers and plants and moving away from nature. When I start sculpture, my innate behavior, memories and emotions for the birds and monuments become active. I wish birds return to their home and make the trees and ruins lively. In my works you can see birds are depicted like men flying them because I assume nature and birds should be free from unnecessary and destructive intrusion. Whenever I create human faces, I create old architectural remains, birds or trees which fill pleasure in our life and give a new passion. In my several works there are single or paired human figurines which are taller than usual human torso which signifies that they are eager to touch the horizon. Through this medium, I see human esteem and characteristic in a modified way. ..........................................Asurvedh
